Luce and what the meaning of editorial was, etc. Is that right?
Yes.
Was there any problem in putting this through the board?
Yes. A lot of people on the board didn't really want it.
Why?
Because they all believe in a perfect pyramid, with a C.E.O.--that there should only be one boss. They still do.
Was it useful or just a piece of paper?
It was useful. It was useful. Still is. I don't know how long it will survive.
But in other words, it did serve--
Well, one of the things, you see, that has happened since--I had had editorial experience. Shepley had had editorial experience. We understood how editorial operations work. One of my failures was that I was never able to get some important editor to move over into the publishing end and therefore have candidates for the future as C.E.O.'s or group heads or something who had editorial background.
