I was denounced by the successor to the Daily Worker -- the Daily World. They had an article devoted to denouncing Buckley and me as a result of the two of us addressing the Ukrainian Day parade people. He never marches in the parade. He always catches up at the end in the park in front of the public library.

Q:

Senator James Buckley.

Koch:

Yes. On the last two occasions we both addressed the group. I marched; he did not. He just speaks, which is all right. I mean everybody has their different priorities. And the Daily World denounced us. They quoted my speech, a sentence in my speech that I gave to this group. I said, “I will march with you until the Ukrainians are free, because until they are free, none of us are free.” And I could say that about any group, and I do. I mean liberty is so entwined, personal liberty. And I make the point -- I always mention the Jews. To mention the Jews to Ukrainians is like a red flag to a bull in a sense. I'm overstating it. I mean Ukrainians were among the worst anti-Semites in the world. They helped the Nazis kill Jews; there's no question about it. I understand that. That still does not lessen my support in this country of the rights of Ukrainians for liberty and justice, notwithstanding some of the misdeeds of their colleagues. And I think they respect that. I hope they do.
