No, at that time you didn't get staff. You got a $10,000 salary and a $5000 expense account. But you did not have staff. And I think I told you the story of how I took my expense account... Maybe I didn't. That's a good story.

Okay, just to finish why I ran for the city council: I had gotten the bug. I had decided I really like public office, even though I had not held one -- I held a party office -- but I really like it and I'm very good at it and I like people and I like the things that you're able to do as a result of being a public office-holder. That's really why I ran, and I thought I could win. I've always thought I could win. No matter -- when people told me I couldn't win, I've always thought I could win. People thought I couldn't win in the city council. And I must say that before running for the city council, I had tried to run for the state Senate, and I had lost the nomination. I didn't get the nomination. I ran for the state Senate in 1964. It's either '64 or '65 -- I can't remember which now. I assume it's '64, although there was a special election. I mean the Assembly and the state Senate had to run twice, one year after the other, and I think therefore it could have been '65. It was for MacNeil Mitchell's position. He was holding it -- state Senator -- and I thought that I should get it, and I was in my judgment screwed out of it by a number of district leaders. They didn't like me. They considered me to be an upstart, and
