worked for nothing. I wanted to do that -- one, because I'd made that pledge, but I also think that people want some recognition. It's not a question of $500. It's a question of “you've honored me; you think my services are worth your paying for them.” It doesn't make any difference what the amount is. There's that element there. Now I don't even have to do that. People just love volunteering for a Congressional volunteer operation, and it's very helpful to me.

Q:

Incidentally, did you follow this same approach after being elected to Congress?

Koch:

I didn't have to because I get 18 people at staff members. and I have volunteers, but I don't have to pay anybody, and I don't.

Q:

I wanted to ask you a footnote question about the election of Berman to the state Senate. Do I recall correctly that after he was elected, he took an ad in one of the legal journals?

Koch:

No, I think it was the Daily News. Maybe it was the law journal. Yes. He said, “State Senator looking for a job with an up and coming law firm” or something along those lines. It was the most ridiculous kind of ad, because I don't recall all that was in there, but the im plication was that a law
