I'm telling you -- I lost.” He said, “We have the police results and you have won. Don't concede.”
This was after the polls. It's not like he fixed the election. But the police get the results immediately. They're phoned right in from the E.D. by the cop who's in charge of the poll, and he had gotten them. He had Stewart House, which we didn't have. And a few minutes later in comes our captain from Stewart House: “We won! We won!” That was very exciting. And we won by 41 votes.
There was a lot of television here. You have to understand this was a big night. It's also raining outside. I remember that now. So the question then came: “Fortyone votes...” Costiyan said, “Impound the election machines.” So I get on the platform and I say, “We've won by 41 votes. The DeSapio people are going to try to change the election. Go back to your posts and guard the machines and don't let them in.” We meant every word of it, but in retrospect it's really very funny, and people streamed out of the VID -- it's like midnight now, like they were going to the Battle of the Marne. They were going to guard those machines until those machines were taken away by the board of elections the next day, and they stayed through the night, standing in front of the building to be sure that nobody went in to change votes. It was wonderful. It was just the most exciting event.
Well, I was elected, elected by 41 votes. The press was
