and gave him what for me was a sizable contribution for the Kennedy Library and said to him, “Now, your brother really deserves two memorials, not one. I hope that you're going to help with both memorials, not just one.” And this seemed to kind of mollify him in some way because he saw that I was really interested in both things. The size of my contribution to the Library could leave no doubt about it, and there was no other say that I could be sure that he would not some two or other kind of deny the whole Kennedy center project because he was so concentrated on the library.

At any rate, they did go ahead and they raised a great deal of money, as you know, for the Library--around $16 to $20 million.

Q:

A lot of it coming from foreign countries.

Lasker:

A lot of it coming from foreign countries, but from many individuals. I was a member of the board of trustees and still am. There are 200 trustees, which was a very good idea. The more trustees you have, the more you can expect money from. This went on, but our efforts to raise money from the business community were hobbled by the publicity for the Library because the general attitude was: Well, the Kennedy family don't seem to be interested in this center. They seem to be
