seem to understand. I talked to Tim Sullivan and I got a really clear picture by what he said. He said, in his Irish brogue, something like this, “Me girl, I seen you around here and I know you worked hard on this and I know you done your duty and I know it's very hard for a young lady like you to work away from home.” They were very gallant in those days. “I'll tell you; it's the truth, Murphy told them to go ahead and put out the bill, but the idea is that the House will pass a different bill. They say, of course, you can't accept it - you're under instructions not to accept it. They don't mean to put it through. They don't mean to let you get that law this year because they know you won't accept the bill that's over in the House with the canner's amendment on it. That's the idea.”
I went almost crazy. I remember talking to Miss Goldmark, telling her this conversation, and saying, “I'm sure that's the case. They know I won't accept. It'll all be very honorable. They'll vote against the amended bill, which we've all said we didn't want. That'll be fine publicity - but no law this year.”
Miss Goldmark hurried around to see what she could do. I think it was Joe Hammitt, practical fellow that he was, who said to me, “Do you really want that bill?”
I said, “Yes, I do.”
