Rules Committee and I demand a vote on whether I can make a report or not!” They called in the parliamentarian and he had to allow the receipt of a rule. The rule was that the bill was to be reconsidered.

On the reconsideration, Big Tim was up instantly. All the others were trying to make a motion, but Tim didn't trust any of them to be smart enough. He moved that the House bill with the amendment be accepted by the Senate. Then, of course, more pandemonium broke out because every-body rose to say that that was not to be done, that the House bill exempted these poor girls that worked in the canneries and so on. I had to stand behind the brass rail and practically every one of its supporters came rushing up to me, saying, “Is this all right? Are you for this or is this a trick?”

I had to say, “Yes, I'm for it. I've authorized it. Yes, I'll stand by. Yes, we want it.” Pauline Goldmark was pulling my coat and saying, “It wasn't. You mustn't say that.” I remember saying, “Pauline, this is my responsibility. I'll do it and hang for it if necessary.” I was frightened and excited, but I just thought I must do this and get that law established.
