for manufacturing and I think to some extent on buildings of multiple occupancy, which were partly manufacturing, partly office and so forth. What is known as the Philadelphia tower, which is now a part of the law of the State of New York, was in existence. It looked like a tower. It's built on the outside of the building, but it's built of masonry. It's a part of the building in a way, but it's separate from the building. You can see them anywhere now because they're a very common and a very good means of exit. It's called an exterior, enclosed, fire-proof stairway in the New York State Factory Law, but it was then known as the Philadelphia tower. If you'll read the description of the exterior, enclosed, fire-proof stairway, you'll see that it's a brick or masonry enclosure. You come off the occupied floor by a door and you enter a vestibule. Then you go around on the outside of the stairway - in back of it. That's to prevent smoke from getting into the stairway. The minute you're in that tower you are safe. You can stand in that tower without being overcome by smoke or fire. For vertical exit it becomes an admirable means of exit. All buildings over a certain height and more than a certain occupancy are required to have exterior enclosed fire-proof stairways with this double smoke proof exit. Nowadays any door leading from the floor
