on the appointed days. Somebody went out and got them if they didn't come. We checked to see that if the doctor made a recommendation, it was followed through. We saw that if they were advised to go to a hospital, they did go to a hospital. We saw that if they were put on special diets, they got extra money for the special diet. We saw that they reported once a month during a certain period and once a week during another period of their pregnancy so that any beginnings of kidney or other complications could be observed and hospital provision was made if necessary, or a forced or early delivery was arranged for. They were always placed in a hospital if it was that.

We also established the rudiments of a scheme of visiting housekeepers to go into the families of the poor when the mother was required to go to a hospital for a period of time and take care of the family. That was very difficult and we couldn't have done it except through the cooperation of the settlement. The various settlements were very, very useful in that and they did pretty well in it. The Maternity Center Association raised the money, or got the cooperation of others who raised the money, to provide for that.

It was here again that this little Lafayette group came in. We had all become acquainted with them in the war service outfit. They walked right in and cooperated with the Maternity
