Center Association, not only making the layettes for the babies, but making what became even more necessary, the delivery outfits. In the cases of the very poor if you wanted a sterile delivery, these outfits had to be contributed. In these little clinics that we established there was a completely sterile delivery outfit, all in a nice tight white bag all sewed up so that when the nurse was called up on an emergency delivery she grabbed the bag while somebody else called the doctor and she got there with a delivery kit that was sterile. The Lafayette outfit made those for us. It was their contribution.
We organized the teaching groups in the hospitals, with nurses' organizations as well as with nurses in training. We organized these two or three pilot clinics. We promoted the idea. We made contact with the Children's Bureau in Washington and got them steamed up about the unnecessary maternal deaths and the unnecessary child deaths and child cripplings. Crippling of course of ten came about through improper delivery. All kinds of things happened. That was what we were doing. The thing was launched, but it was only the beginning.
When I say that it was one of the best pieces of organization work that I ever saw, I don't take that to myself particularly because it was this natural way which the doctors had thought of of utilizing their patients as a
