the people. If you're running for a state office, if you're running for Assemblyman again, I would certainly advise you to run on a platform of saying, ‘This is what I did while I was on the Assembly. I voted for this and I voted for that. I served on the Factory Investigating Commission. I reported all these laws which have been of such benefit to the poor people and the working people.”

He said, “Do you think that's good? Do you think that would be good for a state campaign?”

I said, “Yes, I do. I think that's great.”

He said, “How would it be for Board of Aldermen?”

We talked about it for a little bit. I made the suggestion, but I think he was the one who said, “Why don't I run on that for the Board of Aldermen? Why don't I say to the people, ‘This is the kind of a fellow I've been as Assemblyman. This is a sample of me. If you like it, vote for me as president of the Board of Aldermen.’” I remember it was a very direct approach - “If you like that sample, vote for me for president of the Board of Aldermen. I'll work for the interests of the people and try to make New York the place for them.” It was along those lines.

That's what he did. I don't suppose he had much of anything to say about the details of the work of the president
