Investigating Commission. In that connection I had grown to know him very well. He of course had grown to know Smith, Wagner and the others very well. He'd had a dreadful time finding me because my husband had a small apartment in the house of a friend of his father's during the still wartime crowded conditions and I was there. They had an awful time locating me. I don't know yet how they located me, but apparently they did. Anyhow Elkus got me and asked how long I expected to stay in Washington. I said I expected to go back to New York that night.

He said, “Be sure and be there. The Governor wishes to see you in Albany tomorrow. He'd like you to come up on the Empire State Express tomorrow morning and be there at 11:30 or 12:00.”

I said, “All right. I'll certainly be there, Mr. Elkus. What does he want, so that I can be prepared?”

He said, “I'm not at liberty to tell you what he wants. I don't know what he wants.”

I said, “It's the child labor bill, I suppose. I'll get home early tonight and get that material together. It's at my house and I'll have it all with me.”

“Just as you think best,” said he. “Just be there.”

I expected the Governor to send for me on the child
