He said, “Well, yeah. We'll talk about that later. I've got something else to talk to you about first.”
I said, “All right.”
Then he said, “I was thinkin'. How would you like to be a member of the Industrial Commission of the State of New York?” Just like that with no preliminaries, no dancing up to it, no ifs, ands or buts.
I remember saying, “You mean it, Governor? You mean it?”
“Yeah,” he said, “I was thinkin' of appointin' you.”
I remember sitting there speechless with nothing to say. I was tongue-tied for a moment. I have a picture in my mind of this little inner office of the Governor. I walked over to the window with great big blue velvet curtains and turned my back to the Governor and looked out of the window a minute, hanging on to the velvet curtain, not really feeling weak, but feeling speechless. Then I remember saying to him, “Well, I think you ought to think it over.”
He said, “I've been thinkin' it over. Furthermore I asked you to come up. Don't you think I've thought about it?”
Then I said, “Well, this is quite a surprise to me.”
He said, “Didn't Elkus let on to you?”
I said, “No.”
