He said, “I told him not to, but I thought he would.” He knew human nature.
I said, “It's quite a surprise to me and I don't know. I'd very astonishing. I wish you'd tell me something. What gave you this idea that it would be a good idea to appoint me to the Industrial Commission or to any public office. It seems unusual.”
“Well,” he said, “I'll tell you, because I've been thinkin' about it. In the first place, I think the Industrial Commission is in a terrible condition. We brought that all out when we were making the investigation. I know you know a good deal about it because you testified about it. I know you studied the Industrial Commission and the way it's organized, the way they operate, the kind of people they've got there. I was thinkin' principally about the Industrial Commission - how we've got to reform that, we've got to make it over, we've got to turn it inside out and get it to be a good department. There was a vacancy and I could make an appointment.
“In the second place I've been thinkin' over my situation since the election. Women have got the vote. It's the first time. Women are going to vote from now on.” He looked up in sort of an innocent and tentative way, as if he still wasn't quite sure of his judgment, and said, “I
