thought I ought to show some attention to women. I ought to bring women into the political picture in my administration. I thought about you.”

I said, “Why me, Governor?”

He said, “Well, I know a lot of women. Most of them in the Democratic party are the wives and the sisters of political leaders. Those are the women I know. They're all right. They're nice women, but they don't know anything about things like this. They don't know anything about politics except that they hear in the midst of a campaign. They don't know anything about government. They haven't had any opportunity to find out anything about government. They don't think about government. They don't know how to express themselves about government or anything else. I didn't want to appoint somebody's sister or somebody's wife. That's kind of an insult to women.” I remember his saying just those words - “That's kind of an insult to appoint somebody just because she's related.”

“Remember, I've known you a long time up in Albany. I remembered that when you were appearing before committees, and you've been doing it for a number of years now, you had something to say, you said it quick, you said it clear and I could always understand what you said. I knew what you
