pleasing person. He became very much attached to Mr. Mitchell. He had Mitchell come up and visit him in New Hampshire or Vermont, or wherever he had a summer place. He helped his sons to get a better education than they normally would have gotten. He got them into good schools and colleges and advised him about things like that. It was supposed, and I don't think anybody denied it, that he provided some of the funds on which they went to school and college. That's all right. People do that for their friends. Mr. Mitchell thought a great deal of him. He was really very, very fond of him and devoted to him. There was a true friendship there. There wasn't any question about that.

There were a number of other people on that Civic Federation who were very rich and well-to-do and who liked John Mitchell. He was friends with all of them. I don't know first-hand anything about their relations, except that Mr. Mitchell liked them and he always thought well of them. He defended these friends of his. He explained to me more than once why the Civic Federation was a good idea and a good organization - because it did bring labor and employers together at least on some basis; that there was a discussion of general problems; that it was educative and so forth.
