got John Mitchell in. There were a lot of rich men on it. They liked John Mitchell. He was very personable and agreeable. There began to be these rumors that they showed him favor, they took him out, they showed him around and they showed him perhaps how to make a little money. There were always these rumors and the people who were jealous of Mitchell were always bearing down upon the fact that, “Well, he owns a very fine house out in New Rochelle. How did he ever get the money to buy that? What's his salary?” The mine workers made him many presents, but it was “How did he get this and how did he get that? What does he do on the Civic Federation anyhow?” A good deal of it was jealousy. It was that queer suspicion that some of the labor people had, and some of the so-called intellectuals who were not labor people, but sort of criticized around the fringes, were always raising.

I thought myself that Mitchell was a very sincere person who would never have been corrupted intellectually by his connection with people. He wanted to deal honestly and in a friendly style with these employers. He did. He was very loyal to the Civic Federation and to his friends and acquaintances there.

Franklin MacVeagh, who was rich and came from Chicago, was on the Civic Federation. I've forgotten what his industry was. He was a very reputable person and a very
