deal could appear in person and be questioned. They should themselves take the responsibility for making the decision, writing the opinions and saying why they did it.

That meant that we went around and held these hearings to some extent. That meant traveling around the state a bit. Most of the commissioners didn't like it very much. It seemed to me absurd for grown men, who were really more grown up than I was, to say that they couldn't travel so much and all that. Ridiculous. They liked the food in the Hotel Onondaga in Syracuse. It was other places that they didn't like the food. They found it hard. Of course to go to the small places was terrible. We did go a good deal more than they had done in the past.

I became well acquainted with Mitchell in the long conversations that you have while traveling on a train - the parlor car, with the compartment at the end so that we could have a moating. You get very well acquainted. People relax a little. They tell each other about this, that or the other.
