Then I began to ask Mr. Mitchell questions about his boyhood and about his life. He told the most fascinating story of the mining industry as he had grown up in it. All of his family had been miners. Mr. Lyon said to him, “I never knew you were so long in the mining industry.”

“Oh, yes,” said John Mitchell, “I was a miner from the time I was twelve years old. I want to have you know this, Mr. Lyon. I was what they call a Good Miner. Do you know what a Good Miner is? A Good Miner is the kind of a miner whom the other men group themselves around as a leader. In the mining industry the employer never dares to organize the crew. The crew organizes itself. That's the wise and right thing to do, because the men who can work together and who trust each other organize themselves. It's such risky work, such touchy work and such tricky work that each man has to be responsive to every other man at a moment's notice. They have to understand each other by some kind of deep intuition because there isn't time. You can't make a pattern and a plan in the mining industry. You don't know what you're going to find at the next thrust of the pick. You've got to adapt to it quick. The five or six men that are working together all have got to adapt at the same time.
