What they do is choose a Good Miner. He's the man they work around. He's the man they all trust. He's the man that gives the signal. He's the man that goes first. He's the man that goes and sees what's in behind the next dig of the pick. That man has to know mining and he has to know every living thing that can be done. He has to know every kind of thing that it's possible to do either in a normal operation or in an emergency operation. He has to be able to do it. He has to think quick. He has to be a man that they know will not take advantage of his position and save himself, but will save them all if there's any saving to be done.
“I was a Good Miner, Mr. Lyon, I was. My father was a Good Miner. My grandfather was a Good Miner. My two brothers were Good Miners. That's the kind of people we were. In Scotland it would have been the same thing. That's where my father grew up. That's where he became a Good Miner. That's where he learned the trade. When I went to work when I was twelve years old, I went to work with my father. I was the breaker boy in my father's gang. That's the way you train Good Miners. Your father takes you into the mine. Your father takes you down below. Your father shows you the seam. Your father shows you the way the seam lies.
