father shows you all these things. You learn by working right along behind him, helping him, handing him his tools. That's the way you learn.

“You learn from him how you should behave. You learn how you should behave when you're out of the mine too, because a miner has to be a good living man. You can't take any bad living men down into the pit with you. It's too dangerous. They've got to have clear heads. I never knew a miner that wasn't a religious man. Every good miner is a religious man. The men won't work around anybody who isn't. They want a religious man who knows he's got a duty to God as well as to the employer. That's the kind of a man you'll trust.”

He went on to tell about what he had done when he was twelve and thirteen, how they grew up, what a mother he had - what a good woman she was, how she always had good, hot food ready for them when they came home. “But you must remember, Mr. Lyon,” he said, “when miner boys come home they're all dirty. There were three of us boys and my father and we were all dirty when we came home from the mine. Every single night the first thing that my mother had to do was to scrub us. She had four tubs of hot water ready. We got into those old wooden washtubs. My mother scrubbed our backs. We scrubbed our arms and legs. She scrubbed our ears and heads.
