trouble or they wouldn't stand by him when he needed help when he was having a strike. It was altogether the kind of thing that was pushed very, very hard and not altogether appropriately. So far as I know it's a perfectly legitimate insurance company and has always paid its claims. About that I know nothing. But it operated out of the State of New York so it was under the supervision of the Superintendent of Insurance of the State of New York and I'm sure was a perfectly sound, funded system. They probably carried a reinsurance policy in one of the standard life insurance companies. I'm just guessing at that, but it would be what I would imagine would be the way that they did it. Many of the fraternal insurance companies do that. They reinsure their risks. Every risk that amounts to so many thousand dollars is reinsured by a standard life insurance company.
I think Woll rather lost caste by going into this instead of sticking to the labor union business. Certainly he lost caste with me and with other intellectuals who didn't think he was a bona fide trade unionist. He was also very dressy, very elegant and very pretentious - given to speaking in large, important periods, squinting up his eyes, throwing his nose in the air and giving his views, which were really awfully third-rate views, with unction. He never seemed to enter into the battle or to be a real bona fide
