knew people in the field of art, music and literature. We knew Isadora Duncan. We met her through Mayor Mitchel. He asked us to do something about her tour, and so forth and so on. It seems odd to people today who regard the social worker as a queer kind of a profession which would be out of everything of any interest. But in those days social work was new and rare and we were very interesting people to the rest of the world. Other people were fascinated by the experiences of a social worker and would ask people to meet you because you were a social worker and knew such interesting things about the poor. We were not ostracized. We were very much desired. There weren't many of them. They were few and far between. So we knew everybody.

Columbia University, of course, was a mine of interesting people who were concerned about social progress of the USA and about New York doings - Edwin R. A. Seligman, John Bates Clark, James Harvey Robinson, Franklin Giddings and so on.

Franklin Roosevelt was paralyzed just about this time. Mrs. Roosevelt was a very busy young married woman. We knew each other, but we had no great gossips and long talks. Busy people know each other and have good will toward each other and would call themselves friends without seeing very much of each other. The association was not close at this time.
