experience by the hour practically. Nothing was lost on her. She saw at once the wisdom and the necessity of bringing people into this who had different political ideas and then blending them and of getting people who had political influence. She knew right away what that was. I suppose she assisted in the picking of the members. Elkus, Shientag and Joseph Proskauer all had people to suggest. My memory is that she brought Proskauer into this. The commission when it was finally made up was made up of Democrats and Republicans, political people and social reformers. I sort of think Homer Folks was on it, but I really don't remember who was on it. The newspapers of the day will show that.
It was in this relationship that she became so well-acquainted with Smith and he with her, because once launched the Reconstruction Commission idea met with great public approval. The press gave it a big hand. It was regarded as one of the far-sighted things that Smith did, showed statesman-like qualities and so forth. It had the great approval of everybody. The first meeting that was held in Albany was a meeting to which a very large section of the population was invited. It was by invitation. The explanation of what was to be done and how it was to be done was laid out. There must have been several hundred people there. That, of course,
