the public schools. In some areas they haven't made any headway. Down in Maine they still read the Bible to our children and we still say the Lord's Prayer. But there was a free thinker who settled himself in a town called Boothbay and went before the Board of Selectmen, protesting that it was against the Constitution of the United States. There was a great rumpus about it for one season. We had a town meeting and he was jolly well put in his place. He learned that the Constitution of the United States didn't make any difference to the town of Boothbay. We were going to read the Bible and say the Lord's Prayer, as we always had, and give the children respectable religious instruction. They won't get dogmatic or denominational religious instruction. Nobody is fit or able to do that.

This whole question makes me very mad. What it is is an effort to take religion away from the people. If I were a Communist, I couldn't think of anything smarter to do to get headway in the United States than to undermine the attachment of people to religion. I don't know whether they're back of this movement to do this, but that's what they've done in Russia. To undermine the attachment of people to religion would be one of the quickest ways to prepare their mentalities for the reception of the communist ideas.
