The old Bishop got up. He coughed and he shook hands. Al got him out. I hadn't said a word. I just sat there. But he wanted an audience. He wanted the Bishop to know that somebody else heard him say it. He wanted to know that he himself had been kind of supported by having an audience. It was wonderful. He was not a psychoanalytically introspective person, but he knew that he was stronger with the Bishop with me there than he was without me there. It was very interesting. It was over. He mopped his brow. “It took some doing.”
“You did it fine, Governor.”
“Well,” he said, “you know you have to tell them sometimes. He don't mean any harm. If he knew what you and I know he couldn't talk like that. How would he get to know? There's no way he can know.”
That was a world of experience to me. I never told the story, because it wasn't meant to be told. I never told it, though I've written it out. I've never told it except privately until now. It gave me a world of confidence when I assured people who were in doubt about him in the 1928 campaign that he understood the limits of his religion's
