childhood. I know that an awful lot of them are just paid a wage so low that a grown person wouldn't take it. That's why they're hired. They're exploited, Father, I know that. I've seen them.”

The Bishop said, “Oh yes, but we must rely upon God's goodness and the family.”

Al said, “You know, Father, I understand the duty of the church. I understand your duty. I understand the duty of the priests; I understand the duty of the Holy Father. I'm bound to obey the Holy Father and I'm bound to obey you, Bishop, in all matters having to do with faith and morals. But there's nothing in the law of the church that says that says that I have to obey, or can even think of obeying the church with regard to matters that are economic and social and political. No, no, Father. That's not a part of the duty of the church to tell me that. I'm the Governor of the State of New York and I know more about these things than you or any other priest can ever know because you don't have to deal with it. I'm very grateful to you, Father, for telling me this. Any time you come to me on a matter of faith or morals where I've been doing wrong, you can be sure I'll go along with you, but this belongs to me. This is the Governor of the State of New
