that moment. He had seen enough of what went on. He had a great respect and a great affection for Murphy - not only was Murphy his father-in-law, but he had a real affection for him and a real respect for him. Murphy had a different temperament. He could deal with them. He could cope with them. Foley never said to me whether he thought Murphy did the right things or not, or whether he succumbed to pressures or not, but he said, “I know that the pressures are terrific and that I can't stand them. If I'm going to live the kind of a life that I'm going to lead, I must not go back into the works of Tammany. You can't run it the way you run an ordinary civic organization. You just can't do it that way. The time hasn't come.”
I suspect that Smith urged him to become leader of Tammany Hall. I know that Smith thought Olvaney was terrible, because I talked to him about it and said to him, “My heavens, Governor, you're not going to allow this, are you? You know what Olvaney is. You know he's terrible. You know he's a crook. You know he'll cheat you, he'll cheat Tammany Hall, he'll cheat anybody.”
Smith said that he knew all that but that there was nothing he could do about it. The boys had their minds made up and if Olvaney had enough influence he was going to get one
