hospitality committee. I suppose there always is in every city where they have the convention. In New York it was quite an important hospitality committee. They had definite plans for making people have a good time, besides taking them to Coney Island. They had ideas of lunches, teas and breakfasts given by people who lived in New York to special groups of delegates and their wives. There were quite a good many women among the delegates and alternates to the '24 convention. We learned that in advance, so that in the planning for it there was this woman's committee on entertainment, hospitality and so forth. Their plan was to make things very pleasant and very comfortable for the women delegates and alternates and to show them things that they would want to know.

I remember that the day before the convention opened we had a breakfast at the old Waldorf-Astoria. We had the breakfast in a large private dining room. The local women's hospitality committee was there. I think Mrs. Sumner Gerard presided. She was probably chairman of the committee. Aileen (Mrs. Vanderbilt) Webb was there. She was William Church Osborn's daughter. Irene Gibson was at that meeting. Irene Gibson was a great fan for Smith and had been for some time.
