real at all. That was a mistake, I think, from the point of view of the people of the United States.

I also think that the filling of the galleries in Madison Square Garden with all the bums of New York was probably a mistake, although I don't know that it could have been prevented. By this time the people of the City of New York adored Al Smith so - the common people, the rough people, the “deese boise” kind of people, the people that make up the Brooklyn Dodgers fans - that you couldn't keep them out. They weren't the only ones who adored him. Everybody else did. He hardly had an enemy. He hardly had anybody in the whole State of New York who'd say ill against him, and certainly no one in New York City. Of course there were some of them who thought we ought to have a more refined Governor, but even so they couldn't find anything wrong with him. So I don't know that you could have kept these enthusiasts out of the gallery.

The enthusiasts in the gallery sort of sickened the delegates, because they screamed so much. When they screamed, they used the lingo of the Bowery and Brooklyn. They hadn't been subjected to the modern radio and learned to talk like gentlemen, no matter what they thought was natural. So their screaming was pretty vulgar at times.
