just to show their total enthusiasm. Also they were very impatient of every other candidate. They thought that the meeting in Madison Square was to make Al Smith President. That's what it was for. Why bother with all this other stuff? All these speakers that were nominating somebody else or making seconding speeches for somebody else just bored them to death. They would sort of snort and hiss and wood up because they were bored with it. It just didn't interest them. It was a curious public psychology. They didn't know what the score was. We didn't have a radio there then. They didn't realize that they made an awful impression upon the delegates. They didn't intend to. They meant to make a good one.

It was really very embarrassing. I know that the politicians tried to quiet them. Olvaney even tried to make a dickle with the leaders not to give out tickets so freely and to fill the galleries with somebody else - to get students from New York University, Columbia and any place who would take up the tickets, fill up the seats and not let such noises come from the galleries. That was very embarrassing and one of the outstanding things.
