I still think that he probably did at that time and that he got off into this Liberty League phase in 1936 by the passage of time and by being more and more involved with the corporation law than he was in the public law. He didn't have the kind of glowing quality to him that Smith or Roosevelt did. He didn't have even then. However, he was a more conventional candidate than Smith was, a more conventional candidate than William Jennings Bryan, a more conventional candidate than Roosevelt was later on. He was not very different from Grover Cleveland and Woodrow Wilson. In the type of man he was, in his opinions and attitudes, he was was not so different from them as he was from Bryan, Smith and Roosevelt. He was very different from Calvin Coolidge. After all, he was a Southern gentleman, not a New England farmer's boy. There was that difference.
There was a feeling of defeatism at the outcome of the convention to me and to those of us who had been so hot for Smith. It seemed terrible. This thing had gone on and on and on for so long. We had hoped so much. We had had to raise so much extra money. It went on for three weeks or almost a month. Everybody was actually exhausted. The people who were responsible for the running of the convention had universally wanted Smith as a candidate. It seemed like a kind of stale thing. I don't know if you'd call it defeatism
