because we all went to it and made as good a campaign as we could and Smith wanted us to. But it seemed like a very humdrum kind of a situation. It didn't seem interesting at all.

History was being made at this time, despite its seeming dullness, and continued to be made in New York State. There was legislative progress, progress of social ideas. Some foreigners said to me not long ago, “What you call the New Deal and the Fair Deal was actually born in the State of New York, wasn't it? in the years of this century?” He said it was born in New York State, and I agree with him. I don't know where else the New Deal came from. It didn't come from Iowa, as has been suggested, for example. Iowa didn't make any experiments in social legislation.
