before the Appropriations Committees. It was always me by request of the Governor. Mr. Hamilton never objected because he didn't want to do it himself. It was a thing that he should have taken umbrage at. But he did not wish to, so it was all right for me to do it.

During that period I was doing things that were not strictly my obligation, but which I undertook to help the Governor and to help the Department. I didn't want the Department to look like a fool or get no money. So it happened that whenever the district leaders wanted a favor, wanted something done or wanted to find out something, I was the one they turned to instead of the Commissioner. In that way I got to know them.

I got to know Mr. Curry also. The Governor said to me, “Suppose you go around and have a talk with Curry, since you don't know him.”

I remember saying to him, “That's strictly Mr. Hamilton's duty. I shouldn't be talking to Curry.”

He said, “Oh, go around and talk to Curry. You talked to Charlie Murphy and you was much younger. Go around and talk to Curry. He's a nice fellow.”

I called up Mr. Curry and said I wanted to talk over certain matters with him and that the Governor suggested that
