the better people to go around to the club occasionally and get acquainted with the folks. Jeremiah Mahoney came to me once and said, “Now you should come to the Hall, come to the club.” I went with him to the club. It was in the silk- stocking district. It was all right as a social club. Everybody was very cordial and very effusive. They were too effusive to be really well-mannered, but still it was all right. I've spoken at the club in my district more than once. The clubs take on the general character of the people who live in the district. They're more or less like the kind of people who live around there. That's because they are social clubs.

These clubs originally were like little Tammany Halls, little wigwams. The district leader was likely to be a sachem. He was the forming force. The clubs were formed for mutual aid, benefit and help each to the other and for social life and intercourse - have a good time and go on a clambake.

One of the touching things about New York at this time of year (May) is the maypole dancing in Central Park. People wonder how these things happen.
