service or whatever it is in the light of that background of the individual rights, the individual worth and so on, not treating everybody as though they were bags of meal, but treating their case on their level.”
I got a great idea from that, although I said nothing to him about it. I thought to myself, “Maybe I can get some recent graduates of Fordham Law School who have been trained that way.” I made an experiment. The next time I had a vacancy to which to appoint I called up the President of Fordham and asked him to give me a good introduction to the head of the law school, which he did, who came down to see me. I told him that I had one vacancy and that I might have another. I wanted some absolutely A-1 people - young, imaginative, vigorous, intelligent, trained in philosophy, so that they could take on this social duty and not be just bone-dry judges because the element of law in the matter was the easiest part of it in a way. The element of knowing how to do justice to human beings was the important part of it. I said, “I want somebody who is absolutely top-notch. This is not political, but if they happen to have an uncle who is a Democrat it wouldn't do any harm.”
He sent me a list of three men - privately and confidentially. He didn't tell them that he had recommended them. He told me privately that So-and-so's father had been
