fairly important in a Democratic club out on Long Island somewhere - one of those suburbs like Queens, I suppose - that the other man had an uncle who had actually held office in Tammany Hall, and that the other man's family had always been Democrats, were well-known in their districts. He gave me an estimate of the character of these men and of their intellectual and legal ability. I eventually appointed two of them and they were the best Referees we ever had. They were simply fine.

I liked the sample so I occasionally took another one. Of course I developed some contacts with some other good law schools around the country. I thought what we needed was younger men who were not through with their careers, but just in the midst of them. A number of the people that I got that way have developed into first-class public servants. One of them is now Judge in the Children's Court, Stephen Jackson. Another one of them went to California and held some very important public post out there. They were very good people and have always been successful.

That was all right with Tammany Hall. I called up Mr. Curry and told him I proposed to appoint Steve Jackson, who came from Queens and not from Manhattan. “I'm sorry, Mr. Curry, but I know you don't care about that. Would you just satisfy my curiosity and find out if he's got any kind of
