means, and hit upon the idea that there were some rich Roman Catholics in the country who would be pleased with the idea just because of the fact that their co-religionists were supposed to be excluded from the Presidency. They would be pleased with the idea that it could be done. I think that was her idea, and I'm pretty sure that she went and got Raskob - that is, she made an occasion to meet him. She was extremely good at that. She never let a chance go by. If she went to a given city for some reason or other - a personal reason perhaps - she looked the field over, found out who would be useful to know and got somebody to introduce her. She would talk to that person when she was there.

Her energy was absolutely unceasing. It never dried up. I was once going to Cleveland on Consumers' League business, or Committee on Safety business, or something or other. I remember her saying to me, “Now, when you go to Cleveland, be sure you see ‘So-and-So'.”

I said, “Now why should I see them? I really don't see why I should see them.”

She said, “Because it makes friends for Smith.”

I said, “How shall I meet them?”

She said, “I'll get you letters of introduction.”
