Newton D. Baker was one of those people. I knew Newton Baker. I said, “Surely, I know him.”

She said, “Go see him. You know him. That's just fine. That's clear gain.”

Her precept was “Never lose a chance to rivet a friend into the cause you're now promoting. If you know him some other way, all right, rivet him into the thing you're now interested in.” Newton Baker was one of those people, and there were other people.

Newton Baker came down and had lunch with me. We talked about many things, and among other things the possibilities of Al Smith being President. He thought it was out of the question. I remember that very plainly. It would never do, and the Democratic party would never nominate him. He personally wasn't opposed. I was just a practical matter. He spoke of himself as being a great admirer of Al Smith, but he thought that it was most impractical and couldn't be done. This must have been in '28.

I think it was between '24 and '28 that Belle found Raskob. I didn't meet Raskob until just before the '28 campaign - in '27 or so. He was kind of little, with very bright, very snappy eyes, small, close featured, sharp person. His face came to a point in front. He had very
