campaigning. I know, because I went with her. We went together to Kansas City, Denver and other strange places, trying to corral the women's vote for Smith.

So when I say the “better elements” of the Democratic party, I mean that a man like William Church Osborn was going to his box. I think he was all for Norman Davis in that '24 campaign. He preferred him to John W. Davis, although he was a liberal giver to the John W. Davis campaign when it once began. He would always vote the straight Democratic ticket. He was a good sport. Why don't people like that exist any more? They just don't turn up in this day. He was always a political power to be reckoned with.

Judge Philbin was also one of those very rich men. He was the same type. You could always count on him. When I say the “better elements” I include him, as he was the intelligentsia of the Democratic party. He, and a good many other Wilson friends, were for Norman Davis.

The best people in the Democratic party were for Norman Davis' candidacy but they couldn't put it over. He had a post in the diplomatic service. He was always being used in the diplomatic service by Wilson, by Hoover, by Roosevelt. He was a great friend of Franklin Roosevelt's. Roosevelt offered him all kinds of things. He was always
