“better elements” in any scornful tone. I didn't use it in the term of meaning money. “Better elements” means brains, character, loyalty. I meant the intelligentsia of the Democratic party, the people of good character and integrity. That group was constantly making their way to Norman Davis' box. I don't mean that some of the people who went to see him didn't have money too, but money wasn't the deciding factor. For instance, William Church Osborn was one of the people who were with Norman Davis. Certainly I never knew a man of greater integrity, better character, more intelligent, more patriotic and unselfish in all of his actions, more civic minded than William Church Osborn. William Church Osborn also had some money. That was one of the things that just happened. It never seemed to occur to William Church Osborn that he had money, or to anybody else. He had a good deal, but it was not anything that was in the foreground of his life, or his attitudes, or the attitude of people towards him. He was a liberal giver always to the Democratic party, no matter who was the candidate. He gave to the pre-convention campaign for Smith. I'm not sure about that, but I think he did. He gave liberally to the '28 campaign. That, I know. His daughter went out
