Mrs. Roosevelt and Louis Howe had been very close collaborators during the period of F.D.R.'s illness. What was their relationship before his illness, I really don't know. I don't imagine it was much of anything. They liked each other. It was a pleasant relationship. I don't think it was in any sense personal, until after Roosevelt became sick. Then it was. She called for help and Louis came. They became very close collaborators. She knew that Louis was devoted to him and would help. He did help in every conceivable way. I know that Mrs. Roosevelt loved Louis Howe. She loved him the way you love a person who has stood by you in the midst of the valley of the shadow and not been afraid of anything, a person who has stuck it out with you in physically, mentally and emotionally impossible situations.

The Roosevelt children were just youngsters running around at the time. They were all perfectly all right, but they were just going to school. They weren't on exhibition. You didn't see them, except seeing them come in from school. They had their own place to carry on in upstairs. They were no better behaved or worse behaved than anybody else's children. Somebody was in charge of them - some employee of the household. Certainly they never ranged around the family quarters. You never saw them spinning tops in the parlor.
