Roosevelt lived on 61st Street. His mother had fixed that house to be a double house for the two families - herself and the F.D.R.s. She broke through the doors on each floor so you could go back and forth. You didn't have to go outdoors, but could go right through on any level - the entrance floor, the drawing room floor, the bedroom floors. You went back and forth through an archway in the parti-wall.

Mrs. Roosevelt has written about her relationship with her mother-in-law. I don't have to tell about that. They were both well-behaved ladies and if there was any strained relationship, it was internal. It wasn't external. I think that Mrs. Roosevelt and F.D.R. both at times thought that Sara spoiled the children. She'd give them things that perhaps they'd better not have had. If the parents disciplined them, she intervened. There was one time at Hyde Park when two of the boys had done something very naughty. As punishment the two parents talked it over and decided that the thing to do was to take their ponies away from them for the rest of the summer, and send them over to the other side of the town to somebody else who didn't have any ponies. They did that. It was a punishment to these two boys who had done what they were absolutely told not to do - great misbehavior and disobedience. The ponies were taken away and sent off.
