the existence of that feeling, I had supposed that that was over with, that it was something that existed in my extreme childhood and no longer had any followers. As a New Yorker, it just didn't count. Roman Catholics were all right in New York. I didn't think about it.
Also, as a New Yorker, his colloquialisms and his accent were not repellent to me. I'd become accustomed to it, and so had all New Yorkers become accustomed to it. Although we recognized that it was slightly different from Beacon Hill, or Dover, Massachusetts, or the State of Maine, it was no funnier to me than the State of Maine accent might be represented to be. It didn't seem of the slightest consequence, and didn't seem certainly as funny as some of the Southern talk I heard in the campaign. It was much more easily comprehended.
So I was not prepared to realize how deep the prejudice was until I was sent out into what were regarded as hot spots to campaign for Al Smith. I went a great many places in the campaign for Smith. I think I did more campaigning for Smith, although I was with both of them. The New York State campaigning committee was promoting both Smith and Roosevelt. That was the year that there was a big Woman's Division. I never went out with the woman's caravan, as it was called, because I didn't have time. I was being used
