in these villages. They'd leave literature to be distributed afterwards. It was a very effective thing because it got lots of publicity. They were nice, polite women. If they pulled your door bell, they were polite about it. They never made any enemies and they made lots of friends.

They used the identical techniques that the woman's suffrage campaign people used in the woman's suffrage campaign. Mary Chamberlain was one of the women who joined it. She, and people like her, had done the same kind of thing in the woman's suffrage campaign. They used the same techniques, and to some extent the same people. That was just making yourself known everywhere, well and favorably known. Never make an enemy. Always be polite. If someone starts an argument with you, just be pleasant. Don't have a fight with him. Never pull hair, stamp your foot, raise your voice no matter what they call you and your candidate. It was a very effective thing. I think I joined up with them once or twice. I met them in some town farther north than Buffalo and Rochester.

I didn't travel with them all the time because I was being used to make speeches out West and in the South. That caravan was both for Smith and for Roosevelt. They did both things at the same time, and very honorably.
