I also traveled to a certain extent with the Roosevelt campaign group, but what I was doing primarily at that point was getting the New York State labor people in line for both Roosevelt and Smith. So when we would go to Syracuse, among other things, what I had done was to ask the labor people who lived around Syracuse to come to the hotel to see the candidate for Governor, or to come to the State Fair. I saw that they got tickets in the grandstand at the State Fair to see the Governor and cheer the candidate. That was the kind of thing I did. I was getting them lined up.

They were pretty good. They were not in politics in those days. Labor people were not in politics at all. There was no such thing as a labor vote, and I don't think there ever has been, or there is one now (October 1952). It's a myth. I wish I thought there was one as things stand today, and there is more of a one than there used to be then. There wasn't any then, though we could count on some of the men to be with this. Of course they would vote for Smith because they knew him. The labor unions in New York knew Smith. He had been Governor, after all, for four terms. He was well and favorably known. He was on good terms with them individually. He was Irish and an awful lot of them were Irish. It was all one band of brothers.
