the old Harry. I think she was in the printing trades, and very well educated in the old country before she ever came here. You could send her anywhere. She was a thorough labor union person. She was bold. She wasn't afraid to go upstate into even the carpenters' meetings. She could go into any meeting because she always carried her printer's trade card with her. That, of course, was the open sesame in any upstate community. In whatever labor organization they had, sometimes very meager in some communities, there would always be a printers' union. If they had a local council made up of several unions, the printers was always the leading union. Her printer's card opened lots of doors to her and she could be sent lots of places where you'd suppose only a man would be acceptable as a speaker. She was bold about going right in and demanding the right to speak. She knew what her rights were and she would get them.
The people who were behind Smith were behind Roosevelt. I never saw any difference in the two sets of people in New York State. There was a total commitment for both of them. There was no pulling back - “I'm for Smith, but I don't know about this fellow Roosevelt.” There was absolute support. That was primarily because of Smith's desire and endorsement of Roosevelt for Governor.
