the Pope was coming as soon as Smith was elected. The Pope was going to make his headquarters in Maryland. It was pointed out to us. They knew it for a fact. There was that kind of assurance in what they had to say. They just shriveled. It was perfectly clear to them that the whole idea of having Smith for President was for the Roman Catholic Church to get control of the government, military forces and everything else of the United States.

The illogic of it all hadn't occurred to them and was unarguable with them. It was the most deep-seated prejudice I've ever met.

I remember very striking things about this Maryland episode. In the first place, we were entertained by, stayed with, and in the house of, Senator and Mrs. William Cabell Bruce, who lived just on the outskirts or Baltimore. It's really included in Baltimore, but it's the suburban part of Baltimore. They lived in a perfectly beautiful big house. I'm pretty sure he was still Senator at that time. He was David Cabell Bruce's father, who is now Undersecretary of State (1952). They were of an old Southern family. The Cabells were Virginia of the very best quality. There was no doubt about their quality. They were lovely. In their house hung the pictures of the plantation where Mrs. Cabell Bruce was brought up. It was in the English tradition of the
