I said, “Where?”

She pointed out to me this man, rather short, but not fat, with black hair, a bald head, and a beard such as I never saw in my life - a black, tight, curly, huge beard, covering the upper and lower part of the mouth, very curly and very black. I recognized him. We went down the steps and he stepped forward, as the Mayor had a right to do. He put his arms out and he embraced Irene and kissed her on both cheeks. I thought, “That is something. Irene didn't tell me he was a relation of hers.” I came down next and he threw his arms out and kissed me on both cheeks, embraced me heartily. We have never, to this day, gotten over what it is to be kissed by the Mayor of Danville with the bushy, curly, stiff black beard. It was an experience. That was something to go through for Al Smith:

The band played “Dixie.” We had the works. Everything that could be done was done for us to show us great respect at seven A.M. We shook hands all around. We were introduced. We received bouquets of everything under heaven. We proceeded down to the entrance of the station where half a dozen cars were drawn up with flags on them, banners on them, “Smith for President,” the “Democratic Party,” and also great banners reading “COME TO THE DEMOCRATIC SPEAKIN' TONIGHT” at such and such a hall at 7:30.
